Configure AOL account with Outlook 2016 – Using IMAP & POP3

  1. First of all, you need to run MS outlook 2016 application on your Desktop computer.
  2. Click on the “File” button from the top left corner.
  3. Then in the next window, you should click on the “Add Account” button available just above the “Account Settings” option.
  4. After that, choose “Manual Setup” or “Additional Server types”.
  5. Select the radio button against “Pop or IMAP” in the Choose your account type window.
  6. Click on the “Next” button from the bottom of the window.
  7. Now, you need to add your host server information and user information as given below
    1. Account Type: IMAP
    2. Incoming Mail server: imap.aol.com
    3. Outgoing Mail server (SMTP): smtp.aol.com
    4. User Name: Your AOL username
    5. Password: Your AOL email password
    6. Your Name: Your full name.
    7. Email Address: AOL Email address.
  8. After that, you need to click on the “More Settings” option from the bottom of the window.
  9. Open “Outgoing Server Tab”.
  10. Check the box against “My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication.
  11. Select the radio button against “Use same settings as my incoming mail server”.
  12. Now, open “Advanced” tab and enter the following information
    1. Incoming server (IMAP): 993 or 143
    2. Outgoing server (SMTP): 587
    3. Incoming server encrypted connection: SSL
    4. Outgoing server encrypted connection: TLS
  13. Click on the “Ok” button when finished.
  14. Then, click on “Next”.
  15. In case you entered everything accurately then both the testing tasks will get complete successfully.
  16. You can now close the windows by clicking on the “Close” button.
  17. Finally, you are all set message will appear on your screen. Here, you just need to click on the “Finish” button.

How to configure AOL Account with Outlook 2016 using POP3?

Apart from using IMAP settings, you can also opt for POP3 protocols to setup or configure AOL settings with Outlook 2016 with AOL. The steps to use POP3 for AOL configuration with outlook 2016 are similar to that mentioned above for configuration using IMAP. However, the Incoming and outgoing server will be different. The incoming and outgoing server settings you need to add for the proper configuration are as follows:

AOL Incoming POP3 mail configuration

You need to enter the following information when entering incoming mail configuration settings

  1. Incoming mail server address: pop.aol.com
  2. Username: Your username is your AOL screen name which precedes “@aol.com” in the AOL email address of yours. For example – if your email address is me@aol.com then your username is “me”.
  3. Password: Your AOL email account password.
  4. Incoming Port: 995
  5. TLS/ SSL requirement: yes (TLS/ SSL is required)

AOL Outgoing POP3 Email configuration

In outgoing server settings, the fields like username and password will remain the same. However, following things need to be changed:

  1. Outgoing mail server address: smtp.aol.com
  2. Outgoing Port: 587

In order to protect your privacy, you should enable SSL encryption for both outgoing and incoming mail server.

IMAP or POP3 – which one is better?

We just illustrated the methods to setup AOL account with Outlook 2016 using both IMAP and POP3 protocols. If you are still confused about the method you should choose then the following points will help you a lot in order to clear your doubts.

  • In the IMAP protocol, the received emails are stored on the server while emails are stored on the device while using POP3 protocols.
  • Similarly, the sent messages the stored on the server while using IMAP and stored on the device while opting for POP3 configuration.
  • You should opt for IMAP configuration if you want to sync your email messages across multiple devices. As in IMAP configuration, the messages are stored on the server and they will get easily synchronized with different devices.
